Discover what professional athletes can show you about achieving your new year's resolutions!

I used to own a men's clothing store in downtown Denver and because of the location, I had the pleasure of meeting famous celebrities, professional athletes, business men and women from around the world and even the homeless.

I was curious about what made these people tick, why they thought they could achieve what most people just dream about, i.e. fame, success, and tremendous wealth. I began asking a lot of questions and I found that the individuals who didn't set goals and believed they were worthless led lives of quiet desparation. Those who set goals and believed they could achieve their dreams achieved what society would have you believe as being impossible.

Here is the formula that those who achieved tremendous wealth and success used to catapault themselves into the realm of "I CAN!"

1. Set goals or intentions

2. Believed they had already achieved their goals by using their imaginations

3. Used visualization techniques at least once a day

4. Refused to listen to other's comments and fears

5. Kept focused and remained true to their dream

6. Changed any negative self-talk

7. Didn't view missing the mark as a failure

I think the aforementioned is profoundly simple and most individuals don't believe that they can achieve their desires. I know from experience that anything you set your mind on you can do. I know that a lot of individuals feel that they try and try and try and always seem to come up short. This is the very time not to give into the negative self-talk but to keep focused and persevere.

I ran into a friend at the country store where I live and she was so frazzled and angry because as she put it, "What does it take to become financially independent and do what I want to do?" I told her I understood her frustration and I certainly wasn't going to preach to her with yet another trendy comment to make her feel good when her life was a complete disaster. Yet, I knew that she was always chasing the money and kept getting involved with the proverbial "Get Rich Quick Schemes!" She really wasn't doing what she wanted to do as far as her life work was concerned. She has a master's in counseling and still felt she didn't have the skills to work in that field. What she really needed was to let go of the fear and begin to change her self-talk to a more positive nature that would give her more confidence.

I have learned that you have to let go of the fear and the worry! This is what holds us back and this is what I learned from the pro-athletes who came into my store. Michael Jordan along with many of the other players who played for the Bulls used self-hypnosis daily. In fact an article written in the Wall Street Journal on February 11, 2002 provides evidence that athletes in many other sports used hypnosis for sports enhancement. Adam Malysz, a Bronze Medal Olympic champion used hypnosis for his ski jump victory. Before ascending the ski jump and lunging down the 90 meter slide he imagined descending down an imaginary staircase, 20 slow steps at a time into a trance. The Soviets and many of the eastern block atheletes have used hypnosis for sports enhancement for years and in fact, 11 hypnotherapists accompanied the Russian Olympic team in 1956. Coach Phil Jackson of the L.A. Lakers credits hypnosis for his team's win over the Sacramento Kings in the 7th game of the Western Athletic Conference Championship. My brother who referees for the conference was amazed that hypnosis was credited for the win!

It is well known that Ben Hogan (Golf Pro), says, "Golf is twenty percent technique and eighty percent mental." Jack Nicklaus has stated many times that he believes that golf is 90% mental preparation and only 10% skill. He prepares for his matches by imagining problem putts and mentally rehearsing how he will execute each drive. Tiger Woods has used hypnosis, and meditation extensively and continues to use a hypnotic trigger to focus his mind.

Boxer Ken Norton used hypnosis during his training and believed this is why he beat Mohammed Ali in his famous victory. This was the fight where he broke Ali's jaw.

Now, most professional athletes who use hypnosis are reluctant to admit that they use it, because the don't want to appear weak or perhaps because of the stigma that hypnosis stills carries in the public viewpoint. And some just don't want to give away to competitors their own prescription for success.

So for you, if you want to succeed in your New Year's Resolution this is what you will need to do.

  1. Write down what you want to achieve.

  2. Let go of any fear surrounding what you want. Let go of the self-talk that says, "Who do you think you are!" "Why do you think you can do this?" "You've never succeeded before!" and so on.

  3. Record affirmations on a CD that you can play back as you are going to sleep at night.

  4. Imagine once a day accomplishing what you want.

  5. Let go of any aversions you have surrounding your goal. For example if you look in the mirror and become disgusted because you see a fat person this will keep you stuck. You have to imagine what you want and keep focused on that image.

This is how self-hypnosis is designed and it works!

When Bill Cosby came into my store, I asked him what he thought contributed to his fame. He said that in the beginning of his career he was not all that good. In fact during one of his comedy routines the audience began booing him and throwing whatever they could find at him up on stage. He hid under a piano until everyone left just to keep from getting hurt. I asked him why he kept on pursuing comedy if he was so bad, he replied, "Because it is what I love to do!"

If you have questions about how to set up an affirmation please email me and I will help you. It is very simple and it is literally what we believe inside that creates our reality. I have witnessed individuals who don't have the skill, the training, or the talent but who have become huge successes and you can do it too. Remember what you secretly hold in your subconscious mind you become. Since Valentines Day is coming up, I will be posting a blog on how to attract your soul mate and how to attract new people into your life.
